Radius comes from the acronym Remote Access Dial in User Service. It is a client-server AAA protocol (authentication, authorization and accounting) that is responsible for managing user access to networks through a NAS device.

In the authentication and authorization process, the user, making use of the assigned credentials (username and password), sends a request to access the network to the NAS device, and this in turn requests access to the Radius server.

Authentication process

The Radius server is in charge of verifying that the information of the user who tries to access the network is correct. If the request is valid, the server completes the authentication and sends the required authorization information to the client. If the request is invalid, the server sends the authorization error information to the client.

What are the advantages of using Radius?

  1. Improve network security.
  2. Improves the monitoring of network access based on customer user names.
  3. Allows you to apply restrictions to a specific user.
  4. Individual network accesses are encrypted.
  5. It is possible to disconnect a single user or device without affecting the rest, without changing the password of the rest.

¿How to manage the Radius server from
Wispcontrol?

In order to configure the Radius server, from the Wispcontrol platform we must register the zone router through which users will have access to our network.

Registered the router, Wispcontrol allows you to configure an unlimited number of NAS PPOE and wireless NAS for Radius authentication.

It will be the NAS device that will authenticate, or deny access to the network for each of the users’ requests, as long as their access credentials are registered in our database.

Wispcontrol also allows us to mirror the Radius server. Therefore, in the event of possible drops, the authentication of the network accesses will be produced by the server replica, ensuring that our clients never lose the connection.
